Blue Spark Technologies CEO Gary Johnson Showcases Breakthrough Thin Battery Technology on CNBC’s ‘Tech Effect’ Program

CNBC segment also features ABI Research RFID analyst Michael Liard who cites the ‘limitless potential’ for printed batteries within battery assisted passive applications.

Cleveland, Ohio — July 24, 2009 — Gary R. Johnson, President and CEO of Blue Spark Technologies, was interviewed by CNBC business reporter Melissa Francis about the firm’s thin, flexible, eco-friendly printed battery technology. The interview, which aired on July 20th in the “Tech Effect” segment of CNBC’s Street Signs program, also featured Michael Liard, RFID Practice Director for ABI Research, a leading technology industry analyst and consulting organization.

In the interview, Johnson explains how Blue Spark Technologies originally developed its thin printed batteries with technology licensed from Energizer (formerly the Eveready Battery Company). He relates how Blue Spark is now working closely with global business partners to develop wristbands, RFID tags and ‘smart cards’ for use in a wide range of industries. ABI’s Liard discusses the rapidly growing market potential of active and passive battery powered RFID in safety, security, supply chain and financial applications, noting that the technology’s “possible applications are truly limitless.”

Battery Assisted Passive (BAP) RFID tags offer many of the same advantages of active tags, but at a significantly lower cost. Most new BAP tags coming onto the market are fully compatible with the existing Gen2 RFID architecture, which lowers the cost of integration vs. that of existing active systems. And, with a relatively simple architecture, BAP RFID tags can be manufactured in high volumes using conventional printing processes, and their small form factor makes integration relatively easy compared to active RFID.
